Aluminium Greenhouse Sizes
Aluminium greenhouses are light, strong and never need painting or treating, and their slim frames let in as much light as possible. Below you will find every aluminium greenhouse size we compare, from compact 4′ x 2′ lean to greenhouses to large 10′ x 32′ growing houses, with links to compare prices from leading UK retailers.
Sizes are given as width x depth in feet. Many aluminium greenhouses are sold in either toughened glass or polycarbonate glazing, so check the glazing, door type and number of roof vents on each product page as well as the size.

How to choose the right aluminium greenhouse size
Glass or polycarbonate glazing
Toughened glass lets in the most light and looks traditional, and it is far safer than horticultural glass if children or pets use the garden. Polycarbonate is shatterproof and holds heat well, a good option for family gardens.
Measure the space and the light
Greenhouses need as much sun as possible, so choose the brightest spot in the garden, ideally with the ridge running east to west. Allow room around it to open the door and roof vents and to clean the glazing.
Decide what you will grow
A 6′ x 4′ aluminium greenhouse suits seedlings and a few tomato plants. For staging on both sides and taller crops such as cucumbers, look at 6′ x 8′ and above, and for a working greenhouse with a potting bench, 8′ x 10′ or larger.
Plan ventilation
Greenhouses overheat quickly in summer. Look for roof vents, louvre windows or automatic vent openers, and the larger the greenhouse, the more vents it needs.
Prepare a level base
A greenhouse must sit on a firm, level base so the frame stays square and the glazing does not crack or pop out. Many models offer a matching base kit, which is the easiest option.
Aluminium Greenhouse size FAQs
What is the most popular aluminium greenhouse size?
6′ x 8′ is one of the most popular sizes, with staging on both sides and room for tomatoes. 6′ x 6′ suits smaller gardens, and 8′ x 10′ is a common choice for a keen grower.
Is toughened glass better than polycarbonate?
Toughened glass lets in more light and lasts for decades, while polycarbonate is lighter, shatterproof and insulates slightly better. Both are safe choices for family gardens.
Do aluminium greenhouses need a base?
Yes. A level base of slabs, concrete or a steel base kit keeps the frame square, which stops the glazing cracking or slipping. Most brands sell a matching base.
Do I need planning permission for a greenhouse?
Most greenhouses are permitted development. Within 2m of a boundary the height should not exceed 2.5m, and outbuildings must not cover more than half the garden.
